Girls Night Sailing

It seemed like an odd place to practice dance, standing outside the lifelines, one hand on the shroud, in the middle of a lake. But it was girls night aboard Unsinkable 2. The evening was filled with the laughter of talented, bright young women who laughed, tacked, danced, jibed, and braided their friendships closer together over the course of the evening.

The winds were light tonight, with a relaxing 7 knot breeze all evening. With appropriately lazily trimmed sails, we were drifting along at about 3 knots with 50’s music on the stereo. As dance practice gave way to singing Beach Boys songs, the girls really got to laughing. Finally, someone tired of trying to reach the water with their toes over the side, and instead flipped upside down to try and dip the ends of their braids in the water. They were laughing so hard they could hardly pull themselves back up onto the boat.

It’s one of those nights were everyone enjoys sailing. The winds are fresh enough to still require sailing, but light enough to not distract from conversations, laughs, and giggles among he crew.

After the sun set, we sailed back to the harbor where the fun continued. The girls put up the insect screens in the hatchways, lit up the cabin, and spent the next hour singing songs with the ukulele as they laughed and enjoyed the rest of the night.
